Your switchboard distributes electricity throughout your property and contains the protective devices for its electrical circuits. Older switchboards were not designed for the demands of today’s homes, which may include induction cooktops, air conditioning, EV chargers and other high-powered appliances.
Your switchboard may need professional attention if:
✓ It still contains ceramic or rewireable fuses
✓ Some circuits are not protected by safety switches
✓ Breakers or safety switches trip frequently
✓ Lights flicker or power cuts out unexpectedly
✓ You notice buzzing, heat or a burning smell
✓ There are scorch marks, melted components or damaged wiring
✓ The enclosure is damaged, overcrowded or poorly labelled
✓ You’re renovating or adding new electrical circuits
✓ You’re installing an induction cooktop, EV charger or other high-powered equipment
✓ There is insufficient capacity for your home’s electrical requirements
Not every electrical problem requires a complete switchboard replacement. We can inspect your existing installation, identify any concerns and explain the most suitable upgrade options.
Circuit breakers and safety switches provide different forms of protection.
A circuit breaker is designed to protect electrical wiring from overloads and short circuits. A safety switch, also called an RCBO, is designed to disconnect the electricity when potentially dangerous leakage current is detected.
Because a safety switch only protects the circuit connected to it, an older home may not have appropriate protection across all circuits. We can inspect your switchboard and advise whether additional protection is recommended or required as part of the proposed electrical work.
Depending on the condition of the existing installation, an upgrade may involve:
The exact scope will be determined after inspecting your existing switchboard and electrical supply.
Additional circuits and high-powered appliances can increase demand on an older electrical installation. Before connecting an EV charger, induction cooktop, large air conditioner or other significant load, we can assess whether your switchboard and incoming supply are suitable.
Completing this assessment early can help identify any required upgrades before your renovation or appliance installation begins.
If your switchboard contains old fuses, frequently trips or shows signs of overheating or damage, contact Jordan to arrange an inspection.
If you see smoke, flames or active sparking, keep away from the switchboard and call Triple Zero (000) if there is an immediate fire or safety risk.
