Hardwired Photoelectric Smoke Alarms
Hardwired smoke alarms—also known as mains-powered or 240-volt alarms—are connected to the home’s electrical supply and include battery backup for continued operation during a power outage.
Photoelectric alarms are designed to detect smoke from smouldering fires and are commonly recommended for residential properties. We can assess your existing installation and recommend a suitable alarm based on your property and current requirements.
Smoke Alarm Maintenance
Smoke alarms require regular attention to remain dependable.
As a general maintenance guide:
- Test each alarm monthly using its test button
- Vacuum dust from around the alarm every six months
- Replace removable lead or alkaline batteries annually
- Follow the manufacturer’s replacement interval for lithium batteries
- Replace smoke alarms within 10 years of manufacture, or earlier when specified
- Arrange prompt replacement if an alarm is damaged, faulty or repeatedly malfunctioning

Landlords and Property Managers
NSW landlords and property managers are responsible for ensuring smoke alarms in rental properties remain operational.
This includes arranging annual checks, replacing removable batteries when required and replacing alarms within 10 years of manufacture—or sooner if directed by the manufacturer. A faulty alarm must generally be repaired or replaced within two business days of the landlord or agent becoming aware of the problem.
